IPHONE HACK: How to turn off an iPhone

This blog post walks you through the steps to turn off any iPhone model, along with some extra tips for common situations.

In today’s world, smartphones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. Among them, the iPhone stands as a symbol of sophistication and functionality. While it’s rare for anyone to need assistance with the basics of using an iPhone, some users find themselves stumped by a seemingly simple task: turning it off. Whether you’re troubleshooting, conserving battery life, or simply stepping away from technology, knowing how to power down your device is essential.

How to Turn Off an iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X and Later)

For iPhone models with Face ID, turning off the device is slightly different due to the lack of a physical Home button. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Buttons:
Find the Side button on the right-hand side of your iPhone and either of the Volume buttons on the left-hand side.

  2. Press and Hold:
Simultaneously press and hold the Side button and either the Volume Up or Volume Down button.

  3. Slide to Power Off:
After a few seconds, a slider labeled “Slide to power off” will appear on the screen. Drag the slider to the right.

  4. Wait for Shutdown:
Your screen will go dark, indicating the device has successfully powered down.

How to Turn Off an iPhone with a Home Button (iPhone SE and Earlier)

For older models with a physical Home button, the process is more straightforward:

  1. Locate the Power Button:
The Power button (also called the Sleep/Wake button) is located either on the top or the right-hand side of the phone.

  2. Press and Hold: Hold down the Power button for a few seconds.

  3. Slide to Power Off:
When the “Slide to power off” option appears, swipe the slider to the right.

  4. Confirm Shutdown:
The screen will go dark to confirm that your phone is off.

Turn Off an iPhone via Settings (For Frozen Buttons)

If the physical buttons on your iPhone are unresponsive, you can power down the device through the Settings app:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to General.
  3. Scroll down and select Shut Down.
  4. The power-off slider will appear on the screen. Swipe it to turn off the phone.

Pro Tips and Troubleshooting

Restarting After Power Off

To turn your iPhone back on, simply press and hold the Side button (or Power button for older models) until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

What If the Slider Doesn’t Appear?

If your phone doesn’t respond or the slider fails to show up, try a force restart:

  • For iPhones with Face ID: Press Volume Up, press Volume Down, and then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • For iPhones with a Home button: Hold the Home button and the Power button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

Why Turn Off Your iPhone?

Powering down your device periodically can:

  • Save battery life in emergencies.
  • Reset system processes, improving performance.
  • Allow a fresh start when troubleshooting issues.

Turning off your iPhone may seem basic, but understanding these methods ensures you’re prepared for any scenario. Whether you're rebooting for maintenance or taking a tech detox, you now have the tools to confidently power down your iPhone.
